Jeff Sessions of the United States Senate sent a letter last April to HHS saying he knows that Colorado has made the recreational sale of marijuana legal, but it is still regulated under the controlled substances act. His question to them was did they allow the use of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) welfare program to subsidize drug use. States have been allowed to place the TANF benefit on the personal EBT card (Electronic Benefit Transfer)which acts like a debit card for food stamps. Reviews of the EBT card usage seems to show that the state of Colorado is subsidizing marijuana use. The letter was dated April 10, 2014. Senator Sessions has not received a reply from the state of Colorado yet.
